Rose Pruning Time

Bush type roses grow rapidly throughout the year. They grow tall and produce lots of branches along the main stems. By the time winter arrives most roses need a good pruning.

Give the plants a major trimming while semi-dormant during the month of February. Start by removing all dead or diseased portions, then cut the plants back one-third to one-half.

Complete the pruning by eliminating all but three to seven main canes and removing small nonproductive shoots. Use the following tips to promote vigorous growth and you should cut the first blooms in about 8 weeks:

Roses

Apply a fungicide to prevent diseases entering the pruning cut.

Give plants a first feeding with a rose fertilizer; repeat monthly..

Maintain a mulch layer of 3- to 4-inches.

Water when the soil begins to dry; about twice a week.

Control mites, a major spring pest as needed.
