Fall Lawn Care Made Simple

Once fall arrives gardeners can begin performing lawn care by the book. What most lawns need is a good feeding. Every garden center offers a turf fertilizer that can regreen the grass but if you are looking for a specific analysis select a 16 4-8, 15-0-15 or similar product.

Now is also a time to be thinking about weeds. Large weeds have to be pulled, dug out or spot killed with a non-selective herbicide. Smaller weeds and germinating seeds can often be controlled with the application of a weed and feed fertilizer following label instructions. These products both feed the lawn and eliminate many weeds in one application.

Following are a few more tips to encourage the dense green growth you remember.
Water when spots in the lawn begin to show signs of wilting.
Mow lawns at the highest recommended height.
Have the lawn mower blade sharpened for a clean cut.
Control lingering chinch bugs, caterpillars and mole crickets as needed.
Fall is also the ideal time to fill in the bare spots left from summer. Both plugs and sod should make rapid growth during the more moderate weather.
