Time to Add Palms to the Landscape

Palms make their best growth during the warm spring and summer seasons. If you are thinking of
adding a palm to the landscape now is one of the very best times.

You might select a palm as an accent plant due to its unique foliage. They are often planted near an entrance or next to a patio. Palms also look attractive when grown in clusters of three or more. They can provide some shade for nearby plantings or create a view barrier.

Determine whether your palms like sun or shade and then follow these tips to ensure a healthy planting:

Plant in well drained sands or soils enriched with organic matter.
Set in the ground at it's original depth.
Keep the soil moist until established and add a mulch.
Feed lightly with a lawn fertilizer in March, June and September
Brace taller palms until rooted in the soil.
Trim off declining fronds and old flower heads as needed.

A few palms are not cold hardy but still grown in local landscapes. These are best kept in containers or planted in the warmer location.
