Recycling Amaryllis

Most gift plants that flower from bulbs are best added to the compost pile after the blossoms fade- the amaryllis is an exception. This plant grows well in our Florida climate and can recycled to produce another pot of blooms.

When the amaryllis stops blooming, cut the old flower stalk back to the top of the bulb. If a number of new plants have formed or the main bulb is quite large it's a good time for repotting. Remove the small bulbs and give them a suitable size pot. Then transplant the original amaryllis to an inch or two larger container.

Amaryllis

Follow these tips to produce a pot of flowers next year:

Grow the amaryllis in a full sun to lightly shaded location.
Feed every other week with a half strength liquid fertilizer solution March through September.
Water when the surface soil begins to feel dry to the touch.
Hand pick caterpillars and grasshoppers feeding on the foliage.

Allow the amaryllis soil to become drier during the winter months and discontinue feedings. Wait until the plant produces a shoot with buds before continuing the regular care program.
