If you are looking for a quick cure for the bare areas in a
home lawn try ryegrass. Its almost a miracle turf growing in sun or shade and some
of the poorest soils.
The best lawns are produced with a little soil preparation. Rake
the brown areas to loosen the soil and remove the dead grass and weeds. Then scatter the
seeds over the prepared soil.
Use up to a pound of seed for every 100 square
feet of bare ground. Ensure good rooting by raking the seeds with the soil. Then follow
these tips to produce a bright green ryegrass lawn in about 21 days.
Water newly seeded areas daily; established grass as needed.
Feed lightly once a month with a 16-4-8 fertilizer.
Mow weekly to maintain a height of 3- to 4-inches.
Control weeds by hand pulling or use spot weed control products.
Regretfully this
quick cure for brown spots comes to an abrupt end when hotter weather returns during March
and April. Be prepared to add a more permanent ground cover as the ryegrass declines.
