Cyclamen: More than a Holiday Plant

New cyclamen varieties appear to be adjusting to the Florida heat. Plants with attractive white, pink or red flowers held above the foliage once needed the coolest spot in the home - now they grow just about anywhere.

Kept holiday cyclamen out of the direct sun and you can expect the plant to bloom through early spring. Plants often continue to produce the heart-shaped leaves until summer.

Cyclamen

Give the cyclamen a bright light location and moisten the soil when the surface begins to feel dry to the touch. Also apply a 20-20-20 or similar fertilizer solution monthly. Then follow these tips to enjoy the blossoms another year:
Allow cyclamen to lose their leaves and enter a rest period by withhold water during the summer.
Keep the dormant plants in a cool shady location out of the weather.
As growth begins during fall place the plants in filtered sun.
Begin watering to keep the soil moist and feed monthly.

New leaves sprout from a tuber to produce the plant you remember. But don’t expect the first blooms until after the holidays during the lengthening days of February.
